Biography

Michael Smith is a Registered Nurse (RN) with a clinical background in the Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Stepdown Unit, and Medicine Floor.

Michael is a full-time professor in the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing (HBSN) degree program at Georgian College’s Owen Sound campus. He began his academic journey at the University of Guelph as he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours, majoring in Human Kinetics. Nearing graduation, Michael wanted to pursue nursing due to his interest in pursuing a healthcare career that offered diverse opportunities to learn and specialize in, while caring for vulnerable populations.

In 2019, Michael graduated from York University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honours. Michael’s first clinical experience was on a medicine floor at Brightshores Health System in Owen Sound. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael chose to transfer to the Critical Care Department (ICU, CCU, & Stepdown) as he wished to expand his knowledge and care for the most vulnerable individuals. While working full-time, Michael simultaneously completed his Master of Nursing degree full-time at Western University. In 2023, Michael began his journey at Georgian College in Owen Sound by teaching in the Practical Nursing program, which confirmed his interest in teaching nursing.

Michael began his role as a professor in the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing degree program in September 2023 and has thoroughly enjoyed his experiences so far in supporting the learning of future nurses at the college.

My passion in nursing education stems from my desire to positively inspire and motivate my students to become critical thinkers who are caring, well-informed, and effective communicators. My goal is to not only educate aspiring nurses in the program, but to prepare students on how to navigate the complexities of our healthcare system as a leader in the profession of a Registered Nurse. I take pride in seeing my students flourish throughout the program as they connect both theoretical knowledge and concepts, and ultimately implement them into a safe nursing practice.
