Biography
Melanie Marchand joined Georgian College as a professor in the spring of 2003 and has been co-ordinator of the Honours Bachelor of Police Studies degree program since 2007. Melanie has taught a variety of courses within her area of expertise, including Contemporary Issues in Criminology, Crime and Punishment, Sociology, Policing in Society, Criminal Behaviour, and Analysis and Forensic Science.
Melanie believes strongly in inspiring innovation and connecting our Georgian students, policing community and partners through education. She has a close relationship with the police studies degree students and is genuinely proud of all of their accomplishments. She looks forward to when students reach out upon graduation and share their success knowing that Georgian was a pathway that helped in their journey.
Melanie credits her success and the success of police studies degree students with the effectiveness of the overall team, whom she regards as a great group of committed individuals.
Melanie worked closely with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducting original research on DNA databank offences and crime escalation. She explored whether or not those who committed secondary offences would escalate to primary – or more heinous – crimes. Melanie’s current research interests include criminological theory, cold case investigations, forensic science, crime escalation, the anatomy of violence, and global crime and criminal justice.
