Biography
As an intermediate designer during the Toronto condo boom of 2011 to 2014, Leah’s duties included space planning, lighting and ceiling design, amenity furniture selections, plans and elevations for virtual rendering, onsite co-ordination, specifications and schedule writing, condo furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) selections, and designing condo sales offices.
Her freelance work has been ongoing since 2001, and ranges from residential consultations, creating furniture detail drawings for manufacture, conducting commercial site surveys, and proposing a new design and equipment layout for Pickering’s community fitness centre.
Leah’s teaching career began in 2014 at Sheridan College, with a focus on first-year sustainable design, and fourth-year thesis studio courses. While these two courses have been her mainstay, she has also taught AutoCAD, drafting, building construction, and both second- and third-year studio courses. Leah is currently a professor in Georgian’s Honours Bachelor of Interior Design degree program.
My favourite thing about the design profession and teaching is that design can – and should – be for everyone. Access to good, sustainable design is something everyone deserves, and I tell my students this; design is a powerful tool that can make the world a more equitable place to live. My passion for teaching lies in imbuing this mantra in my students: interior design is not simply about marble slabs for affluent clients, it’s also about bringing about the much needed changes in the world like education and health-care facilities. These changes are not possible without the interior designers of the future, and I enjoy being a part of that.
