Interior Decorating alumna paying it forward for small businesses following in her footsteps
Feb. 24, 2025
Entrepreneurship can often feel like a lonely undertaking and an uphill battle.
When Markie Tuckett, an alumna of Georgian’s Interior Decorating diploma program (class of 2013), left her job as principal designer at a kitchen and bath design company to start her own business, she did so without capital, credit, clients or contacts.
But with creative determination, a “community over competition” credo, and a complex skillset nurtured through her time at Georgian, Markie has built a thriving business and is now passing along her expertise to other small businesses – creating a supportive community where everyone can succeed.
My co-op complemented the knowledge I gained in the classroom and provided me with in-demand industry skills, including how to work with clients, solve problems and think on my feet. The company where I completed my placement even hired me on right after graduation. The program really allowed me to jump into what I wanted for my future, with the confidence to seamlessly enter the field, build my career and even break out on my own when the time came.

Markie Tuckett is an alumna of Georgian’s Interior Decorating diploma program (class of 2013).
Building a business with courage…and heart
Markie was introduced to the foundational principles of her chosen field while homing in on specific areas that interested her most in the profession, like cabinetry and kitchens.
Beyond the vast knowledge and techniques she learned in the classroom, Markie says the most transformative part of the experience was the experiential learning opportunities Georgian integrates into every program.
Supporting the entrepreneurs of tomorrow
Knowing firsthand the challenges of growing a business, Markie has also made it her mission to support and empower other entrepreneurs.
From board roles with community business organizations and networking events for women-owned companies to grants for struggling small-business owners and even mentorship for young entrepreneurs at Georgian and beyond, Markie is giving back as a trusted mentor and advocate and doing her part to strengthen the business community.
Markie was a 2024 Premier’s Awards nominee in the creative art and design category.
