Indigenous perspectives on healing and mental health
Dec. 3, 2018
John is a drum maker and storyteller from Wasauksing First Nation. He’s also a student of the Miikaans Teaching, which is an Anishinaabe teaching about the Spirit’s journey through the physical realm and the mind’s adjustments to physiological and spiritual events.
He adds this expertise in the Early Psychosis Intervention Team with the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Enaahtig Outreach Team.
His past work includes coordinating spiritual services at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, lecturing at Georgian college and serving as an Elder and Traditional Healer for inmates at Fenbrook Institution.
John is also one of the founders of “Feather Carriers: Leadership for Life Training.”
We asked John to share his knowledge with Georgian students and staff. Each of his sessions focused on mental health and healing from an Indigenous perspective.
John shared his knowledge of the healing journey and also shared a variety of stories, staying true to traditional Indigenous teaching methods.
