Culinary students heating up kitchen for soup contest

Two students in chef's whites stand on set of the cooking showFirst-year Georgian College Culinary students are preparing their best soup recipes for the inaugural Culinary Student Soup Competition.

Soup’d Up, a contest sponsored by Georgian College, Fresh-a-Fare restaurant and Rogers TV, pits contestants against each other each week. The winner in each week wins a spot in the semi-finals, taking place April 15 at Fresh-a-Fare’s Bayfield St. location in Barrie. Semi-final winners will have their soups featured at Fresh-a-Fare restaurants.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the competition to the winner and both runners-up.

The winner receives $1,000 tuition for the second-year of their Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation program, a $500 cash award from Fresh-a-Fare, an appearance on Rogers TV Showtime, a baking kit from Canada Cutlery Inc. and a Cuisionx cooking kit from DirectBuy Barrie. Two runners-up receive a $250 cash award, a baking kit and an appearance on Rogers TV Showtime.

Soup’d Up airs on Rogers TV Wednesdays at 11 a.m., with re-runs at 4 and 11 p.m. until March 18. The first episode featured Culinary students Benjamin Ross and John Cooper – watch their showdown here.
