Cabinetmaking student Josh Petrie places second in woodworking competition
March 28, 2018
Cabinetmaking Techniques student Josh Petrie placed second in the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC) competition held at the Barrie Campus on March 24. This annual wood manufacturing competition is hosted by a woodworking program at a different college every year.
Students from Georgian’s Cabinetmaking Techniques program have participated in the competition for the past two years but this is the first time Georgian has hosted the event.
The competition is an opportunity for competitors to show off their woodworking skills, compete for cash prizes and get their name known in the industry.
“The competition held in our shop this weekend was a terrific success,” says Cabinetmaking Techniques professor Lynn MacKinlay. “We had representatives from the commercial cabinetmaking industry judging nine competitors from Humber, Conestoga and Georgian. I’m very proud of our contestants who are halfway through a one-year program and competed against second- and third-year students, as well as apprentices.”
Petrie has volunteered for extra projects and helped facilitate two of the three skilled trades workshops the program has facilitated for Indigenous youth. MacKinlay added that he’s positive, enthusiastic, hard working and prepared rigorously for the competition.
Jenny Nelson, a 2015 Cabinetmaking Techniques alumna placed third in the competition.
Congratulations Josh!
