Top 10 not-so obvious dorm essentials
Aug. 30, 2019
The day you move into residence can be a bit hectic, as dozens of students and their parents find their way around campus, meet new roommates and say goodbyes.
Here are 10 items you might want to bring with you to make the transition a little easier.
1. Hanging shoe organizer
This one is for more than just shoe-lovers. Hang it up-boom!- instant storage space for all kinds of items.
2. First aid kit
We hope your stay at Georgian is a safe one, but just in case you need a Band-Aid or gauze, consider bringing a small first aid kit with you.
3. Toilet paper
Related to the previous item, you don’t want to be left without toilet paper if your roommate used it all. It’s a good idea to have some extra rolls handy.
4. Swiffer/small vacuum
Did you spill chips or coffee all over the floor during a study session? Now you’ll have a way to clean it up.
5. Iron and ironing board
Now, you don’t have to have a crisp shirt for every class, but you might want one for a job interview or work. Stay looking sharp by ironing once in awhile.

6. An extra lamp
Whether you might want another lamp at your desk or one at your beside, a little extra light can be helpful.
7. Coffee maker or kettle
Who are we kidding? Caffeine has been fueling students for decades, so why break tradition? Residence allows both of these items.
8. Mattress pad
Need a softer sleep? There’s a mattress pad for that. Also read this article for tips on how to get a better night’s sleep as a student.
9. Folding chair
In between studying and sleeping, you might want to have a couple friends over to visit. Instead of a handful of people sitting on your bed, consider bringing a folding chair or two.
10. Tupperware
Whether you made it yourself or got some takeout, make sure to keep it fresh in your fridge with some sealable containers. Bonus if they are microwave safe.
