Midland Campus offering free pre-apprenticeship program this spring

Those looking to gain skills for entry into the skilled trades can start building an in-demand career with Georgian’s free Industrial Mechanic Millwright, Welder, Industrial Electrician, and Plumbing pre-apprenticeship program at the Midland Campus. The 32-week program starts May 3 and includes a 12-week work placement.
Midland Campus Associate Dean Mac Greaves said the pre-apprenticeship is ideal for those seeking to enter the skilled trades, but who need additional training and support.
“Georgian is committed to increasing the number of entrants into apprenticeship programs by offering pre-apprenticeship programs that address and respond to skilled trades shortages in the region,” says Mac. “The program will provide an introduction to the skilled trades and pathways to apprenticeship programs.”
In addition to hands-on learning, students will receive first aid, WHMIS and working at heights training, and such soft skills as communication, teamwork and personal management. This will help them connect to a robust job market and meet entrance requirements for the trades. Job search skills and job and trade readiness planning are also included.
Former millwright pre-apprenticeship student Blaire Montague said his career path was uncertain before he heard about the program. That uncertainty disappeared after his first day in the program.
“Signing up for the pre-apprenticeship program was probably the best decision I have ever made,” he says. “Today, I’m employed as a shop technician at the college and working alongside the very people who taught me. The skills I learned while in the program were a perfect fit for this job, and I could not be any happier with my decision to enrol.”
Graduates of the last two cohorts have gone on to other postsecondary programs at the college, or have secured employment and are currently working in the field.
The program will be offered through a combination of remote and in-person learning. Any in-person classes will follow safety protocols as outlined by the provincial government and local public health units.
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, and not already registered as an apprentice.
