Georgian College students are celebrating Colleges Week by doing what they do best – learning from and contributing to our community.

Colleges Week is a national initiative and in Ontario, many institutions are organizing events that celebrate the 50th anniversary of the province’s college system.

Two groups of students from the Event Management program are hosting events filled with nostalgia and fun, while raising money for two separate charities.

The first is a fashion show, A Strut through the Ages, on April 6, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Lion’s Gate Banquet Hall in Barrie. Models donning trends from the 60s through the 00s will walk the catwalk to the music of local rock band Cardinal Street. Other fun activities for guests include retro trivia, a candy bar and photo booth. Tickets range in price from $15 to $20 and can be purchased online or at the door. All funds raised will be donated to Cody’s House – Youth Mental Health Healing Centre and to scholarships for Georgian students.

“The best part of the project so far has been meeting new people, from the photography and culinary students who are involved to our student models. The more we talk about the event with everyone, the more we hear how much mental health impacts us all, so we are really proud to be supporting Cody’s House through our work,” says student Summer Miller.

On April 7, Dance the Golden Decades takes over Ascent Lounge in downtown Barrie from 6 to 10 p.m. In this team marathon, groups of four to 10 people will dance to everything from the Beatles to Beyoncé. There will be awards for the team raising the most money, best dressed and best dance moves. All funds raised will be donated to the RVH Child and Youth Mental Health program and Georgian College counselling and mental health and wellness services. There is a registration fee of $10 and teams are asked to register by March 31.

A third group of students has planned a celebration of the growth of multiculturalism at Georgian since its inception. From now until April 5, all Georgian students, alumni, faculty and staff are invited to share their country of origin on an interactive digital map. With 1,500 international students from 60 countries, and many first generation Canadians, the college is rich in diversity. The map will be revealed on April 5 in front of the Segal International Centre. Participate at www.worldcomestogeorgian.ca.

These capstone projects are the culmination of everything students have learned in the Event Management graduate certificate program. They apply lessons about logistics, food and beverage, sponsorship, marketing, budgeting and more.
