Georgian reveals plan to transform the student experience in Orillia

On Monday, Feb. 10, Georgian College made a deputation to Orillia City Council about a proposed expansion to the Orillia Campus. President and CEO MaryLynn West-Moynes, Orillia Campus Principal Mary O’Farrell-Bowers and Orillia Students’ Administrative Council President Scott Anderson shared the plan with council and asked for its investment in this strategic opportunity for growth.

Our vision for the campus is to add a $10.8-million, 32,000-square-foot building that will house a new Community Safety Institute and an expanded Social Entrepreneurship Centre. The state-of-the-art facilities will help us deliver more interactive and scenario-based education and training. Those studying Community Safety and Human Services programs will have access to a forensic sciences lab, outdoor equipment for GPS tracking and designated areas for crime scene staging, hazardous material training and fitness testing, among other features.

A larger Social Entrepreneurship Centre will allow Georgian to expand the great work already being done by students through the Community Projects Initiative and similar programs. As social entrepreneurs, these students use business principles to foster positive change throughout the community.

This facility will help make the Orillia Campus of Georgian College, as well as the City of Orillia, as a destination for community safety and social entrepreneurship studies.
