The seventh annual Base Borden Run, held Sept. 25 at CFB Borden, raised $26,400 for the Operation Hero scholarship, ensuring generations of students will benefit from this special event.

Representatives of the run’s fundraisers – the Barrie Construction Association and Simcoe County Home Builders’ Association – presented Georgian College President and CEO MaryLynn West-Moynes with a cheque on Nov. 14 at the Barrie Campus. Founder of Operation Hero, CFB Borden Honorary Colonel Jamie Massie, was present as well. Massie is also Georgian’s Honorary Campaign Chair and a Georgian Fellow.

The scholarship supports dependents and spouses of serving members of the Canadian Forces who are pursuing a postsecondary education at Georgian College. More than $189,000 has been raised through the run for Operation Hero in the past seven years.

Students like Allison Batley, whose father is serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, have already benefitted from the scholarship, along with 10 other Georgian students. Batley is the first member of her family to attend college and is currently studying in the Graphic Design Production program at the Barrie Campus.

President West-Moynes says that the run is a truly collaborative effort that signifies the profound respect the local community has for veterans and serving members of the Canadian military.

“We deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by the family members of Operation Hero recipients,” says West-Moynes. “We owe it to the brave men and women who have served, and who currently serve, to do all we can to live our best life and to help others in support of our country.”
