Program description
This certificate is available to all students who want to improve their effectiveness as writers in business, government or industry. Clear communication with external and internal audiences contributes to the success of small and large organizations, non profit agencies and government institutions. Students focus on the critical, analytical and strategic communications skills needed to be successful. Certificate completion requires six courses, two mandatory and four optional.
What are the admission requirements for the Communication Studies program?
Communication Studies admission requirements
OSSD or equivalent with
- Grade 12 English (C or U)
Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing. Applicants who have taken courses from a recognized and accredited post-secondary institution and/or have relevant life/learning experience may also be considered for admission; refer to the Credit for Prior Learning website for details:

What courses are included in the Communication Studies program?
Course offerings and equivalents
COMM 1016 (or it’s ODE equivalent) and COMM 2017 (or it’s ODE equivalent) are mandatory/required courses of the certificate, these must be taken in addition to any 4 other COMM optional listed to receive the certificate. COMM 1016 is a prerequisite for all level 2 COMM and must be completed first. Please refer to the program outline for more information.

How do I apply to the Communication Studies program?
Register on a course-by-course basis, paying as you go
Part-time students do not go through an application process for this program. To register for courses, you’ll need a Georgian College student number and declare your major. Declaring a major allows you to take all courses under that major.

- From the course listing, select the course(s) you want to register for
- Add the course(s) to your cart and proceed to checkout and submit payment

Finance and fees
As a part-time student, you may be eligible for OSAP funding, depending on the number of courses you take per semester.

As a part-time student, you can take one to three courses per semester, paying on a course-by-course basis.

Online learning
These courses are offered through OntarioLearn. Visit the OntarioLearn webpage to learn more.
OntarioLearn courses are set up as equivalents to the Georgian courses. You can choose to take the ODE courses or the Georgian courses.
When a Georgian course isn’t available to be delivered online, we’ve listed an OntarioLearn course in the delivery schedule. The majority of the Georgian courses have ODE equivalents set up. You can choose to take either course.
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
Previous postsecondary education: If you’ve completed courses, or some or all of a program, at another accredited postsecondary institution, you may be able to transfer all or some of your courses into a related program at Georgian.
Relevant work or life experience: If you have relevant work and/or life experience that relates to your program(s) of interest at Georgian, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is an academic credit option.
