Victimology

Course description

In this course, students examine the specialized field of criminology which places particular emphasis on victims of crime, its impact on their lives and factors connected to victimization. Students take an academic approach which incorporates examining theories related to the explanation of victimization, the history and development of victimology, the nature of victimization and victim surveys, current provincial and federal legislation related to the fear of crime and prevention issues. Specific attention is given to the examination of types of victim groups, rights of the victim, and the development and accessibility to the many agencies that are available through victim services.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
