Trauma and Informed Practice

MHCC 1003

Course description

Trauma-informed care has emerged as a transformative best practice to improve client care within organizations, and current best practices point to the need for a trauma-informed approach with clients. To this end, organizational safety, trust, transparency and cultural sensitivity take on increased importance, as the interventive focus shifts from “what’s wrong with you” to “what happened to you.” In this course, students explore the principles of compassionate, trauma-informed care, and identify practices used when treating clients. Risks and challenges such as vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and compassion fatigue among clinicians are addressed, as well as strategies for self-care.
