Course description

In the context of child and youth care (CYC) practice, applying a developmental-ecological perspective, students explore mental health and interventions. The students examine the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and psychological illnesses including, but not limited to neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, bipolar and related disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, trauma-and stressor-related disorders, disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, neurocognitive disorders, personality disorders. Students develop both formal (evidence-based) and informal (life-space) interventions to promote positive change and healthy development for their clients.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
