Course description

In this introductory course, students are provided with a fundamental understanding of the aspects of Criminal Law in Canada from a police perspective. Beginning with a theoretical basis of the Criminal Code of Canada, this course ensures students understand the role of the Supreme Court of Canada, law reform, and the unique sections of the Criminal Code including civil law, constitutional law, common law statutes and case law. Students develop the practical skills required to analyze the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal procedures, and police powers.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
