Foundations of Interviewing

Course description

Building on content from Interpersonal Communication, students apply their knowledge of verbal and non-verbal communication to develop effective interviewing skills necessary to retrieve information from victims, witnesses and accused persons. From a theoretical perspective the course explores the factors that affect the reliability of victims of crime, witnesses and accused persons. It also examines the current legal and ethical requirements imposed by both legislation and jurisprudence in Canada. Through the application of behavioural observation questions, students enhance their skill in detecting deceptive persons, and properly record their observations.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
