Course description

Students analyze conflicts they may encounter as first responders and explore strategies to recognize, prevent, and safely manage potentially dangerous situations involving interpersonal conflict and/or individuals in crisis. Students develop an understanding of the first responder’s legal and ethical responsibilities to assess risk and select the appropriate response. With an emphasis on individual and public safety, students practice effective communication, de-escalation skills, and protection strategies that are essential to safely manage behaviours.

Students registering for credit courses for the first time must declare a program at the point of registration. Declaring a program does not necessarily mean students must complete a program, individual courses may be taken for skill improvement and upgrading.
