Support staff strike: Latest news and FAQs updated daily

The full-time support staff bargaining unit at all 24 colleges across Ontario went on strike at 12:01 a.m., Sept. 11.

The union’s collective agreement expired on Aug. 31.

The strike doesn’t include full-time or part-time faculty, librarians or counsellors, nor does it include part-time support staff. Employees in these bargaining units are required to continue to work.

The College Employer Council (CEC) represents all 24 colleges in Ontario and bargains on their behalf with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).

Georgian College’s primary concern is the education of its students. It remains hopeful that the CEC and OPSEU settle this dispute as soon as possible.

Picket lines

While the college remains open during the strike, you may need to cross a picket line when coming to campus. Picketing is legal during a strike and is a form of protest where workers gather outside their workplace to raise awareness about the issue.

Motorists are reminded to use extra care when turning onto campus property, as pedestrians and picketers may be using the crosswalk. The safety of everyone is paramount.

In some cases, cars and pedestrians may be stopped before entering campus. In other cases, cars and pedestrians will not be delayed. Either way, it’s extremely important to ensure you cross any picket line safely.

Cars stopped

In crossing the picket line, please do the following:

  1. If driving, make your way through the line cautiously. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way. This includes picketers.
  1. Be friendly and courteous. These are people you may work with.
  1. Avoid provocation or confrontation with picketers.
  1. Be patient. Do not accelerate to try to get through the picket line quickly.
  1. Picketers may delay access for drivers, cyclists or pedestrians as they share information. You may also be delayed leaving campus.
  1. If you feel that your safety, or the safety of anyone else is in jeopardy by crossing the picket line, do not cross it. Go to a safe place and call Campus Safety Services (CSS) at 705.722.5100. Please also report any incidents or unsafe behaviour to CSS or use the Safe@Georgian app

Cars not stopped, but picketers are present

  1. Avoid provocation or confrontation with picketers.
  1. If you are stopped, be patient. Do not accelerate to try to get through the picket line quickly.
  1. As noted, picketers may delay access for drivers, cyclists or pedestrians as they share information.
  1. If you are not stopped or delayed, continue onto the campus safely as you normally would. You may be delayed leaving campus, and the guidelines are the same as when arriving on campus.
